Climate change, as one of the greatest challenges of our time, raises the need for a comprehensive societal transformation, encompassing the fields of culture and cultural heritage. While numerous strategic documents and initiatives supporting the green transition in culture exist at the European level, this discourse remains insufficiently present in Serbia. The lack of awareness about the importance of ecological issues, coupled with a scarcity of public policies encouraging environmentally responsible practices, especially in the immovable heritage sector, makes this topic essential for exploration.
The Green Heritage Initiative project aims to initiate a green transformation within organizations and institutions dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage, as well as to raise public awareness about the importance of ecological sustainability in culture. The project is geared towards empowering cultural heritage institutes and other organizations involved in managing immovable heritage to become active participants in the green transition process by developing and implementing environmentally responsible practices. It addresses the adaptation of organizational strategies and operational procedures, enabling these institutions to align their activities with green policies and contribute to combating climate change.
The project’s main activities include mapping and researching existing practices within the heritage sector, training experts in the field, developing an e-toolkit, and preparing the Green Book of Recommendations for policymakers. The final online conference will serve as a platform to present the results and promote sustainable solutions in this sector.
Through education and empowerment of professionals in the field and promotion of green practices, the project aims to establish sustainable solutions that will reduce the ecological footprint of the cultural heritage sector and enable effective adaptation to climate change.
