Research on Climate-Related Policies Addressing Museums in the EU

For the purposes of the annual report of the Network of European Museum Organizations (NEMO), the research team of Green Art Incubator conducted a study on green policies addressing the museum sector in the 27 countries of the European Union.

The research resulted in the publication of the report titled Museums, Climate, and Politics – Taking Political Action in the Sustainable Transition, which was presented at the European Museum Conference held in Finland in November 2023.

The report provides summaries of national and local policies in the field of environmental protection and climate change relevant to museums in EU countries. Its goal is to raise awareness within the museum sector and support museums in fulfilling their potential as partners with decision-makers and community leaders in the sustainable transition of Europe.

The research methodology included a detailed examination of primary sources—laws, strategies, action plans, and other official government documents related to climate change and cultural production. Documents such as cultural and museum activity laws, National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP), National Recovery and Resilience Plans, and National Long-term Climate Neutrality Strategies until 2050 were analyzed, along with other relevant acts.

In addition to the analysis and summaries of relevant policies, the report includes case studies of museums currently implementing ecological sustainability guidelines within their activities, as well as a practical guide for advocating green policies in this field.
